Restore Your Treasures

Denise Lasley Haynes

Services Offered

Textile restoration, conservation and repair. Specializing in Navajo rugs, quilts and bead work. I also work on costumes and embroidered textiles, and repair and mount textiles for framing.

Navajo rugs are one of the main types of textiles I enjoy working on. I have a large collection of yarn to use in my repairs, and a spinner does custom spinning for me when I can’t find yarn to match a rug in my supplies. I also do custom dyeing when needed.

I repair Navajo rugs for several American Indian Art dealers in Tucson and New Mexico, as well as private clients. I find it very satisfying to take a rug that has problems and restore it to its original beauty.

Quilts are another textile I enjoy working on. I repair damaged areas, cover worn areas with newer fabric that closely matches fabric from the same time period, and cover worn binding with new binding.

Customer Reviews

“I am very pleased with her work and would highly recommend her.” —Mark Sublette Medicine Man Gallery, Tucson, AZ

“Very high quality restoration work.” —Charles Gideon, NM

“Denise has done an excellent repair job of several Navajo rugs I own. You cannot pick out the repairs once the rugs are back on the floor. They look original. I highly recommend Denise for any textile repair.” —Ken Burles, Tucson, AZ

“As a native of AZ, designer and collector I have used Denise on numerous occasions to repair and restore antique navajo rugs and one Turkish rug. Her eye is incredible and her restoration is unbelievable. We laughed the last time because she had forgotten to put a small colored thread to indicate her repair – and we couldn’t find it. That’s how good she is. I have recommended her to other clients and friends.” —David H. Hundley, Pasadena, CA / Tucson, AZ /  Santa Fe, NM

“I love the restored pad, (blanket) and am using it only when I feel the need to be especially fancy. I rode it during a clinic in Sonoita recently and got a lot of compliments. Thanks for fixing it up for me, it is very special.” —Mike Cochran, Filmmaker & Lawyer

“We have worked with Denise for the past five years, and can speak highly to both her conservation skills and her professionalism. Her work is completed in a timely manner; she stays within her quoted estimates, and always alerts us when she is shipping back a completed textile. She is one of the most talented weavers in the country, and to whom we send some of our most valuable pieces.” —Jed and Samantha Foutz, Shiprock Santa Fe Owners

Estimate Information

For an approximate repair estimate, send the size of the textile, size of the area to be repaired, a photo of the entire textile and close up pictures of the damage to be repaired (you can put a ruler in the picture). Upon receipt of the textile, a more accurate estimate can be given.

Ideally, Navajo rugs should be clean when shipped, as I do not clean them. This allows me to work with the true colors of the yarn. Occasionally, a rug does need to be stabilized before cleaning.

A 50% deposit is required before work on the textile is started, with the balance due upon completion. The client pays shipping charges both ways. Payment is by check or money order.
